The cost of an investment is the price you pay per share, while the margin of safety is the difference between the cost of the investment and what you can sell the investment for. The cost basis of a security is the amount paid for the stock. This is often the cash that went to the company for the purchase of the security. But it is not always the cost of the security. This would include the purchase of the stock at a discount, the tax you paid on an out of the money stock, or a premium if you cashed in a non-dividend paying stock. Sometimes the cost basis is not the same as the selling price. For example, if you sold the stock at a loss, there is usually no cost basis, since you paid no cash for the stock. If you paid cash, but it was later disallowed as a loss, then that amount is your cost basis.
