7 Things You Have To Give Up If You Want To Be Successful

Personal habits are a critical factor when it comes to being successful in life. No one has ever reached great heights by possessing unhealthy habits. If such a person does become rich or famous, he/she will fail to sustain their position for a long time.

This article is for someone who wants to be successful in life but is not able to do so because of some of their habits and behaviors. I am guessing you already know your life goal. Once you are aware of your unconscious behaviors, you can do something to get rid of them. And then you will be free to design a roadmap that will take you to your goal.

There is a clear distinction between the way a wealthy person lives his/her life and a poor person goes through life. The difference is not in their intelligence or knowledge, but it is in their daily habits. As Robert Kiyosaki–the author of the best selling book Rich Dad Poor Dad— famously said: “A person can be highly educated, professionally successful, and financially illiterate.” You must know how finance works if you want to be successful.

Here are some things you will have to give up if you want to be successful in life.

1. Making excuses all the time

Most people are always waiting for others to give them direction in life. They blame others if things don’t go their way. Making excuses will never lead you to the path of success. Because, instead of taking action, you are choosing to do nothing. As Hollywood actor Clint Eastwood rightly said: “What you put into life is what you get out of it.”

The number one thing that stops you from going for what you want is the negative thinking pattern that makes you feel like you are not good enough. So, why should you even try?

Taking responsibility for your life is the quickest way to stop making excuses. It means being aware of the consequences of your actions. So, next time when you make a mistake, don’t blame others, take responsibility and learn from it.

2. Looking for a magic pill

“Slow and steady wins the race.”

-Robert Lloyd

The magic pill solution is very prevalent in today’s society. People are very much inclined towards fast and effortless ways to achieve things. The best example of a magic pill is the 5-minutes abs commercial. The 5-minutes abs promise that you will get rock-hard abs within two weeks of using their product. This might sound quite enticing to someone who is overweight and lazy.

But the long term effects of these quick-fix solutions are negative. Furthermore, most of the quick-fix solutions available in the market don’t even work. For instance, it takes at least a couple of years of hard work in the gym to get fully fit and have the physique that you want.

Along with that, you also have to eat and sleep well. Knowing this fact, it is ridiculous to think that a 5-minute abs program will help you achieve similar results. So, stop looking for easy solutions if you want to be successful in life.

3. Fear of failure

7 Things You Have To Give Up If You Want To Be Successful

Fear of failure stops people from trying things out. It is also the number one obstacle that keeps people from becoming financially independent. In reality, failure is supposed to expose our weakness, so that we can work on them and eliminate them eventually.

Ego is our false sense of self. We create a mental picture of our best self. Your ego protects itself by creating a delusional fear inside your head. Don’t let your ego win. It just wants you to stay the way you are. Moreover, your ego also gets threatened by any major change in your life. To be successful, you will need to evaluate your life and make systematic changes to it.

4. Seeking approval from others

We are hardwired to seek approval from anyone who might seem like they have more authority than us. This survival strategy was useful in the prehistoric period. But in today’s world, seeking approval and validation from others will stop you from being free and unrestrained.

Not being good enough is another reason people seek approval from others. Everyone who is at the top of their field once had to start from the bottom and work their way up. Instead of owning up to our shortcomings and learning to live with them, we seek validation from others.

5. Unhealthy habits that stop you from progressing

7 Things You Have To Give Up If You Want To Be Successful

Your habits are indicators of the quality of your life. Good habits lead to success, happiness, and spiritual well being. Along with forming good habits, it is equally important to become conscious of our bad habits.

Binge eating, not getting enough exercise, not reading books, watching too much television and not sleeping enough are a few common unhealthy habits people have. If you have any of these bad habits, do not try to force yourself to do the right thing. Instead, replace the old habit with a new one.

Your brain will not comply with you when you are trying to get rid of a bad or unhealthy habit. It gets habituated to the old patterns and wants to do what it is used to doing. So, when you replace an old habit with a new one, you get the same amount of dopamine rush in your brain that the old habit provided. But this time you are doing something constructive with keeping your long term wellbeing in mind.

6. Procrastinating and waiting for the right moment

Procrastination is a habit that gets triggered by stress in your life. It’s your way of taking a break from a hectic life. But like every other habit, it can be broken too. All you have to do is be aware of what your stress responses are and how you are currently dealing with the problems in your life.

Are you drinking too much alcohol, binge-watching television shows, or overeating? Once you know what activity you are indulging in to avoid work or whatever it is that you’re running away from, you can consciously stop yourself from doing it. Over time, you will break the pattern of avoidance and begin to focus on your desired activity.

7. Toxic people in your life

7 Things You Have To Give Up If You Want To Be Successful

“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

-Jim Rohn

Your close friends and other people you spend time with, determine how much success you will achieve in life. Surrounding yourself with positive and like-minded people is one of the quickest ways to succeed in life. When you spend time with people who are miserable or unhappy in life, you slowly begin to get affected by their toxicity. Toxic people are everywhere, so you need to keep your eyes and ears open to protect yourself from them.

People stay in toxic relationships because they think it’s benefiting them somehow. For instance, one might choose to work for an organization that pays well but doesn’t treat their employees properly. In this scenario, you sure become financially secure but what about your spiritual and emotional wellbeing? In a toxic relationship, there is always a major compromise. So, evaluate the people in your life and get rid of anyone who might be hurting your chances of success.

Which of These 9 Types Of Intelligent Are You?

Published

By

When we talk about intelligence, most of the time it’s on linear terms. Either someone is intelligent or they aren’t.

What some people refer to when they talk about intelligence, is academic prowess. “She’s very intelligent, always at the top of her class.” Other times, they refer to quick-mindedness or wit. “He always has a response to everything, quite an intelligent man!”

There is no general consensus on what intelligence actually refers to. Then comes along the question of origin. Where does intelligence come from? Is it genetic; are you born with it? Or do you become intelligent because of your circumstances, such as going to a good school?

Psychology answers these questions in a few different theories. My favorite one is by the American developmental psychologist Howard Gardner. It’s called the Multiple Intelligence Theory. Gardner talks about how multifaceted intelligence really is, and how it interplays with what we consider to be ‘talents’.

Gardner introduced 9 types of intelligence. Most people have all types of intelligence in them, but at varying degrees. That means you’ll have some amount of intellectual capacity of all 9 types, but may be strongest in only one or two.

You can do a quiz to find out which type of intelligence you are, and then come back here and read up about your type of intelligence.

Let’s find out about the different types!

Understanding your type of intelligence can greatly help in self-awareness of your strengths and weaknesses and also with career choice!

Visual-Spatial Intelligence

People strong in visual-spatial intelligence are great with visualizing concepts. They also tend to have a good sense of direction.

Architects, Artists, and Navigators score high on Visual-Spatial Intelligence

Linguistic-Verbal Intelligence

People with this kind of intelligence have an affinity for words. They’re able to use language effectively for communication and tend to be comfortable with the written and spoken word.

Teachers, Writers, Lawyers are all high on Linguistic-Verbal Intelligence

Logical-Mathematical Intelligence

You have strong Logical-Mathematical Intelligence if you’re great at handling logical operations and have always been good at Math! These individuals have a strong analytical brain and are great at problem-solving.

They’re also interested in research and empirical data. That’s why you’ll find Engineers, Scientists, Mathematicians all high in Logical-Mathematical Intelligence.

Bodily/Kinesthetic

People scoring high in this kind of intelligence are said to have strong dexterity and motor skills. Their proficiency lies in tactile actions. They tend to be good at sports, dance, and other activities that require the brain to be fine-tuned to the body’s movements.

They’re also great at learning things through doing rather than reading or hearing about it. That means that they learn through experiences, kinesthetically.

Actors, Dancers, Sculptors, are all examples of professions that would require high levels of Bodily/Kinesthetic intelligence.

Musical Intelligence

Yes, Music is an intelligence too! We think of it as just a talent, but it’s definitely an intellectual capacity. People who have music intelligence show proficiency for playing musical instruments from a young age as well as a deep understanding of rhythm and melody.

They’re also great at remembering tunes and picking up musical patterns. They’re best at learning something if they attach a melody to it. Miley Cyrus and the Bone Dance episode — we’re looking at you!

Music intelligence is found in a wide range of musical careers, from composers to producers and artists.

Interpersonal Intelligence

You’ve probably used the term interpersonal skills at a job interview, thinking it just means you get along with people. It’s also a form of intelligence, according to Gardner, and is much more than being extraverted.

Somebody with strong interpersonal intelligence doesn’t just get along with everyone, they also instinctively understand human emotions. They are able to identify and relate to almost anybody, and ‘speak the language’ of human emotions fluently. This means they can recognize someone else’s emotions and take it a step further by manipulating it (for better or worse!)

They intuitively know the motives, intentions, and desires of the people they interact with.

Great career options for people high in interpersonal intelligence are Psychologists, Counselors, Salespeople, or Politicians!

Intrapersonal Intelligence

While Interpersonal Intelligence was all about understanding other people, Intrapersonal Intelligence is all about truly understanding yourself and being in tune with your own emotions, desires, and intentions.

They have a high level of self-awareness and are able to accomplish success in life by truly knowing themselves. They are able to spend time day-dreaming and introspecting, and can feel enriched with quality alone time.

Philosophers, Writers, Scientists all have great intrapersonal intelligence since they are able to identify their own strengths and weaknesses and hone their skills for greater achievements.

Naturalistic Intelligence

Simply put, if someone has a green thumb, they would score well in Naturalistic Intelligence. However, there is also much more than that. People with high intelligence in this category are able to be in tune with nature and have an affinity for nurturing and devoting time to other species.

It explains why some people have a burning passion for environmentalism and deeply care about animals and nature while others have no capacity for it at all.

They’re excellent at identifying patterns in nature and understanding the different ways that other species ‘communicate’.

Unsurprisingly, people with high naturalistic intelligence are Farmers, Gardeners, and Botanists.

Existential Intelligence

People with existential intelligence have the capacity to devote their life to deal with the abstract and the intangible. They’re in tune with the spiritual realm and can spend time pondering concepts about the universe and religion.

Religious leaders, philosophers, astrologists all have very high existential intelligence. They have the ability to ‘look at the bigger picture’ for most of their life without getting bogged down by the nitty-gritties of the everyday.

How Reading can impact your Day to Day Life?

Published

book read

Reading is a healthy habit, which, if practiced daily, can change your entire life around. Do you want to know why? Through Reading, one can not only gain knowledge but also stay acquainted with the outside as well as the inside world. The best thing about reading daily is to have an isolated place for yourself in your mind, where you can run off to. Most people don’t have the patience or intention to read, and that too, daily. Though this is a habit that takes time to settle in but trust me, once it does, you would never regret it. So, here is a list of reasons why you should read daily?

Why should you read daily?

  • To gain knowledge

Once you start reading daily, and by Reading, it can be anything – you can read few pages of a novel, or a magazine, or newspaper, or even poetry – you would notice within weeks how much your knowledge regarding the outer world has improved. Through Reading, one can have clear information regarding the current affairs, and hence, stay updated.

  • To improve your vocabulary

Through Reading, you can definitely learn new words and hence, improve your vocabulary. Most people make it a habit to learn a new word from the dictionary every day, but if you read daily, you are bound to get new words and make a list of them on a notebook with their meanings, which is definitely going to be helpful for you.

  • To have a make-believe world

The most beautiful consequence of Reading is having one’s own imaginary world, where one can live a life full of magic. This is the extraordinary superpower one acquires while reading. In this busy daily life of ours, we all look for a secluded place where we can feel the essence of peace. Reading can fly you off to the imaginary land of sunflowers, daisies, and cats who can indeed talk.

  • To become more attentive

Most people lack patience nowadays. Being impatient and restless has become a severe problem in today’s world. Here, Reading can help you calm your mind and improve your observation skills. It works like meditation. In no time, you would find your mind focusing on details and becoming more attentive to events, which used to go unnoticed.

  • To reduce stress

Reading is similar to meditation, and hence, it definitely helps to reduce your stress. Books always have a calming effect on one’s mind. It takes you away from daily problems and stressful situations and helps your mind to gain stability. Not only it helps in reducing stress, but it also helps to decrease the anxiety levels of a person.

Everyone should make reading a daily habit. One should switch off the mobile phones, turn off the television and take some time out to read. It works wonders on one’s day-to-day life and changes one person’s entire personality. Though it can be hard at first, with time, you would cherish the moments alone, reading in a corner while your mind is flying off to Narnia.

Post-COVID: Transformation of work Culture

Published

on

By

online meetings

The environment and situation around us promote us to adapt to change. The epidemic COVID 19 has not just changed the structure of a workplace but also changed the idea of communication between individuals. Technology has become the survival kit for many organizations as they move their offices online. Applications and communication websites such as zoom, slack, Trello have become the organization’s best friends. With the fast-growing online base, the future of companies post-COVID 19, is something that needs to be considered or discussed. Work from home scenario was first seen to be frustrating but now people seem to have become accustomed to it. Hence when they do make the shift from a virtual office to a real-time office, it is sure to transform the meaning of work culture.

Working from the comfort of your bed to a flexible job timing, you log into your meeting this work from home has become the new normal. Companies have been changing the way they function, and it has been a chaotic few months for everyone due to the corona pandemic. This has made virtual offices a reality. Trying to function at times like this has been difficult, the change has been both positive and negative, while also requiring improvements. But, going back to office spaces and resuming work, would include massive changes and adjustment from both parties. Businesses would try to survive with the conditions, while the employees would be trying to adjust to the void that COVID left behind. Going back to work would be defined differently. The definition would include people coming in and out at their preferred timings, as well as for deciding how much time they want to work in proximity with people. This means that people would come into office spaces, but with their own weekly schedule and pace. Therefore a great cultural change would take place for many industries and setups. Working form home includes the dress code of wearing pajamas and thinking of comfort, which would affect the concept of dress codes in office spaces. The idea of comfort would change the dressing culture of organizations.

The culture of meetings and communication would have a different understanding among the organizations. Working with virtual mode to communicate for so many months meant adapting to it, and has become the most efficient way. The technology in real-time offices would just be a means of connection, and not requiring everyone to be in the same room. Not just this but the idea of meetings all together might be re-evaluated. Commuting ideas or messages would turn into email threads or chat rooms. Presentations could be shared online and interaction between people would remain in these mediums. Meetings defined this way would lead to co-working spaces being promoted by companies for their employees. Hence, the idea of buildings as an office space would change as the organizations would pay for their employees to use such spaces and would cut down on real estate for organizations. This would be different for different sectors of work, but nonetheless the culture of working in an office building would change.

With business comes, traveling and the idea of the same would truly change. People would be more hesitant to take up traveling, and if they do they would be more careful and take precautions. Paranoia might seep in and travel to other countries would be avoided as much as possible. Further companies might even evolve traveling, by making it online. Organizations would convert meetings in other countries online and it would seem more efficient in terms of cost as well. Post pandemic companies are going to be in a crunch in terms of finance, their idea would be to survive. The ones who adapt to change and shift with time are the ones who survive, but to survive they would try to cut the extra expenses. Survival kit would also incorporate the sacking of employees. Many companies have already started to fire employees due to the sudden downfall of the economy. Various sectors are trying to survive and keep afloat, and making difficult decisions.

Final Thoughts

Safety being a huge concern during COVID would still remain post-pandemic as well. Individuals are going to be more aware of their surroundings, and their health would be their priorities. So, when they do meet their colleagues, greetings would be different. People would be careful and social distancing would now become a part of their normal behavior. Companies too are going to take more precautions with their employees’ health. Routine check-ups would be very common, and temperatures would be checked when employees enter the buildings. When individuals open the door to enter their office they would not just be greeted by the view of their cubicles. They would also spot sanitizers placed everywhere, and trying to guess who is under the mask. Health care rules would be altered, an employee feeling under the weather would be asked to work from home. The time of the employees is monetized and hence it wouldn’t matter where they work as long as they do the required days work. Work culture would be under construction Post-COVID and only time can tell what the new look truly holds for everyone.
