PFA Player of the Year: Who Will Win it?
One of the biggest accolades in football is winning the PFA Player of the Year. It has been won by some of our generation’s best players and will continue to set this precedent for as long as the Premier League is at the top. With the season getting closer and closer to being over, who will win it?
Erling Haaland
As soon as it was announced that Manchester City had signed the incredible young striker, the tide of the Premier League changed; his instant impact on City was obvious, and it has continued this way. This season, he is currently sitting at the top of the goal-scoring charts with 18 goals in the league, and we know for a fact that this won’t stop here. We won’t be surprised if the season ends and he has close to thirty goals again. His inevitability in games is what pushes him closer than anyone else.
Phil Foden
Foden is very well known by Premier League fans, but he was accused of not living up to the potential he has. Well, this year, those criticisms disappeared; he started to improve his output, got constant minutes, had a slight position change, and was able to play to the best of his ability, and it has shown. Recently, he has been getting lots of goal involvement and has started to drag City forward again and push them further in the title race.
Without Foden, Manchester City would not be as close to the top as they are.
Mohamed Salah
With Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table, it would be wrong not to include a Liverpool player, and who else but Salah? He is currently Liverpool’s top scorer and assister in the league, and he has carried the Reds to the top of the league at this moment. With goals in big games and the same hint of inevitability as Haaland, it would be a tragedy if Salah didn’t get nominated. With Liverpool playing Manchester City this weekend at home, the latest Premier League betting odds via BoyleSports have City as favorites, but with Salah and Anfield on their backs, we wouldn’t count Liverpool out.
Virgil van Dijk
Since the injury in 2020, people have been worried that Van Dijk wouldn’t be able to come back and be as good as he once was, and in the first season he came back, he did look a bit rusty. With a few mistakes and more people highlighting and watching him, his performances were not living up to their old heights. However, this season especially, we saw Van Dijk back to his very best. With great and consistent defensive performances, Liverpool has this man to thank for the position they find themselves in.
Other Nominees
With the Premier League filled with some of the world’s best players, it’s hard to write about them all.
Players like Rodri, Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, and Ollie Watkins are very unlucky to miss out. Rodri and Rice are two of the most important players on their respective teams; without them, they would not be as good as they are right now. Rodri has been unbeaten in the league for 59 games. It is a ridiculous feat and a record. An outside shout, but one that can’t be overlooked, is Ollie Watkins. Aston Villa are exceeding their expectations, and he is at the forefront of that. With 16 goals and 10 assists in the league, he has the most goals and assists. He is performing at a very high level, and it would be a travesty if he failed to get nominated. Finally, Bukayo Saka is consistent and has a good amount of goals and assists, but we don’t believe he has the performance levels of a plate-of-the-season contender.
Final Winner Predictions
We think that the three final players in the race will be Mohamed Salah, Phil Foden, and Erling Haaland, but this is very dependent on the winner of the league. If Arsenal wins the league, the award could easily go to an Arsenal player, but this depends on Arsenal’s motivation, and this is the same for Manchester City and Liverpool. Our final choice is Erling Haaland. With his number of goals and involvement on the pitch, we think he will be the obvious choice.
