HOW TO TEACH CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS IN A CLASSROOM?

Published

on

Teaching a student requires skills and patience; it is more necessary for teaching children with special needs. Now, these children can have their separate classes or be part of regular classes. A teacher must be equipped to deal with complex teaching situations. For example, a student with special needs might not be able to keep up with the same pace as everyone else in the class. Therefore, the teacher must find a way to help the student without slowing down the overall class progress. Continue reading this article to find out the steps an educator can incorporate in order to formulate the best teaching method in a class.

Organization Skill

The actual teaching process becomes easy if one has the organization skills required to manage a classroom. When dealing with a kid who needs special attention, the teacher must check everything beforehand to create a more systematic way of learning. The structure is essential for every student to thrive well; it is especially significant for students who operate differently from others. For example, one suffering from ADHD must be given a task suited to his cognitive capacity. If the student does not get proper attention, he may fail to comprehend the assignment and therefore could not perform to his full ability.

  • There are different types of disabilities that a student may suffer from. Some students have physical disabilities such as lack of hearing, vision impairment, cerebral palsy, while others have mental disabilities.
  • A teacher must know beforehand the type of disability a student has to prepare the classroom accordingly. For example, if one suffers from a vision problem, the teacher must allow the student to sit in the front of the class so that he can see what is written on the board. Small adjustments like these may go a long way.

Individual Study Plan

As mentioned before, a teacher must always pay extra attention to the students with special needs in class. The teacher may formulate a study plan suited to his particular necessities. The implementation of differentiated instruction method allows a student to learn better in a controlled environment. Since the study plan is suited for his specific needs, he can learn more without feeling burdened by excess study materials.

A Fair Chance

Just because one is differently-abled does not mean he cannot participate in the class discussions and contribute his ideas. While quizzing the class, be sure to ask the student with special needs to answer the questions. He must not feel isolated by the other students because of his physical or mental disabilities. When he feels accepted by others, he will have a chance to experience a traditional form of schooling which will, in turn, help him develop interpersonal skills.

Keep The Lessons Easy

Teaching every student is an individualistic experience. A method that works well with one student might not fly with another. Similarly, when teaching a student with special needs, be sure to keep the lesson work simple. If one is burdened with hard tasks, one might lose interest in continuing the study. The future of education is digital, that is why CP Family Network recommends the use of helpful tools and open discussions are the key to success when it comes time for your child’s screen time management. The role of AI in reshaping special education can be beneficial, especially since parents may not always understand their child’s learning differences and needs better than they did before going through this process together as a family unit.
