Toyota is Building a Smart City

While they may predominantly are thought of as car manufacturers, Toyota is branching out in a new direction. They aim to create what they are calling a “city for the future,” and around 2,000 people will eventually inhabit it even though it is estimated that only 360 people will be there at the beginning. The Name and Announcement

Named Woven City, the groundbreaking project began in February 2021. It’s set near to the incomparable Mount Fuji. The intention is for researchers to test their products in real-time. Although there are many people involved, there is a chance for additional researchers to join in. The name was selected because of the way that the traffic will be distributed. There are going to be three ways to get around. First, some vehicles will be the faster ones – basically cars. Then, there will be roads for smaller vehicles such as scooters, and these could have speed limits attached. Finally, areas will be pedestrianized. Finally, as there will be the need for goods to be brought to the city, underground roads will be used purely by trucks and delivery vehicles.

Explaining the City

The main intention is to test AI. It is one thing to test it in the virtual world, but also tests are needed in the real world. The site is 175 acres, and Toyota claims that it will be fully sustainable once it is completed. Data will be collected and kept, and communication will happen via sensors. From the beginning, the only cars that will be permitted are those that are zero-emission. e-Palettes are already being used as these are the self-driving vehicles that have been developed and produced by Toyota. The initial inhabitants will be the families of Toyota employees. Former employees will be there as well as the researchers and developers.

Who else is Involved?

BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group, the Danish architects, were involved in designing the city. Wood will be the primary material used when it comes to the buildings, and human labor will be affected. Robots will make up the central part. Despite the Danish links, the houses will be Japanese.

Homes in the City

Even when the residents return home, they will be able to take advantage of the latest technology. In the same way that robots helped with the construction, they will help around the home. AI will carry out sensor-based household tasks such as putting away items and emptying the bins. Despite relying highly on technology, there is plenty to do outdoors. Large parks will be involved, and many areas will not allow the use of cars. People may want to have AI to improve their lives, but they also require human interaction.

The name derives from the use of specific streets for specific types of traffic. Cars will be one form of transport and scooters will be available. Walking will be an option and some areas specially set up for that.
