Right across the UK, we’re facing a mental health crisis at present. Millions of people, from Lands End to John O’Groats, are suffering, but it seems to be even more rife in our bigger cities.

That’s especially the case in London. It’s believed that over 900,000 people of working age have mental health disorders in the capital, and that number is rising.

That’s certainly been noted in places like UKAT London, a mental health clinic London way, which has seen an influx in patients battling the likes of anxiety and depression.

But why are people in the city suffering so much?

Well, it comes for a variety of reasons. London really is like nowhere else in the country, and some of the more common reasons people are struggling include:

Work-related Stress

Of course, one of the biggest reasons people are struggling with their mental health is down to their jobs. Many jobs in London are high-paced and equally high-stress. It’s the city where big decisions are made, and that can take its toll, particularly in those places where there is a work hard, play hard attitude that perhaps should have died with the Dodo.

It’s driving many people to alcoholism and drugs as a coping mechanism, which is only damaging the mental health of people even more.

There’s then the Stress of the City

But even getting in and out of work can be stressful. It’s a hugely busy city, more so than places like Manchester and Birmingham. A constant rush. Which can take it out of people.

There’s no escape, no place to stop and take a breather. And with that all day, every day, it can have a massive impact on a person’s mentality and daily life.

We’re in a cost-of-living Crisis

From rent payments to the price of a potato, everything has gone up in price over the last 12 months. That’s had a dramatic impact on people nationwide, but given the cost of living was already so high in London, many residents are wondering how on earth they’ll survive.

That can send so many spiralling thoughts around anyone’s mind, and with no end in sight in regards to the likes of inflation, it’s becoming impossible to know when it’s going to get better.

Loneliness is a Big Concern

It might be a huge city with lots of people, but loneliness is a real concern for many Londoners. It’s easy to get lost in such a place and with many people working and living in the city doing so as a result of leaving home to work in the capital, it’s easy to feel a long way away from loved ones.

It’s a worrying time for many people, and the London authorities do need to be doing more to help people at this present time, otherwise numbers will continue to rise not just around mental health, but the likes of addiction too.
