Mental Strength: How You Can Train It

Mental strength is always needed when we are challenged. It can help us achieve our goals both in extraordinary situations and in everyday life. It helps us to stay focused and capable of acting, even when we reach our physical or mental limits
When we need this inner strength varies from person to person: For athletes, for example, it is important in competition, while paramedics need it in stressful situations. But it also plays a key role in everyday life – for example, when we want to keep our resolutions, initiate change ,or work towards a goal over a longer period. Mental strength means not giving up in the face of setbacks and sticking with it, even when things get uncomfortable.
What is mental strength?
Mental strength helps you to achieve exceptional performance. Mental strength is the ability to remain strong and overcome challenges even in stressful and demanding situations. It means that you can call upon your maximum performance to the point. This allows you to stay focused in stressful situations and last longer. Any mistakes won’t throw you off track so quickly either, as you are able to see them as part of the process. You are also less likely to get frustrated or give up. Doubts or fears are also less likely to thwart your plans.
Of course, physical fitness is always an advantage when tackling challenges of any kind. But your mental strength gives you a performance advantage on a psychological level. You can train it just like a muscle. You repeat similar strategies, and over time, your discipline, motivation, self-confidence, determination, optimism, and concentration will improve.
Mental strength cannot be measured like blood pressure or body temperature. If you want to train or test your inner strength, you can use mental toughness tests, especially in the field of sport. They are designed to help better understand mental resilience and strengthen it in a targeted manner. However, a scientific overview from the Journal of Applied Sport Psychology shows that many of these questionnaires have not been sufficiently tested. Currently, only one test, the MeBTough, fulfils all quality criteria (including structure and reliability of results), but is not freely accessible. Two other instruments, the MTQ-18 and the Mental Toughness Index, are considered promising, are practical to use, and already provide good initial results. However, both still lack clear scientific confirmation of their stability over time – i.e. the question of whether they reliably deliver consistent results when used repeatedly.
How to train your mental strength
Mental strength is easy to train. To achieve mental strength, you need to realise that you are entirely responsible for your life and your actions. This may sound like a burden, but it is actually pure self-determination. You can determine your goals and how you want to achieve them.
So always have your goal clearly in view. If you want to achieve something, you need to know your goal. Only then can you work on your willpower. Make sure that your goal can be ambitious, but that it always remains realistic.
Be kind to yourself
According to the Institute for Modern Psychotherapy, self-discipline is not a question of hardship or self-mortification, but is primarily the result of joy and a sense of purpose. If we pursue goals that really motivate us and take small, achievable steps, perseverance becomes a natural consequence, not torture.
‘Practice makes perfect’ is not an empty saying. The better you prepare for your goal or the challenge ahead, the more processes you can automate. This is helpful when you find yourself in challenging or unexpected situations. Even under stress, you won’t lose focus, but can rely on the fact that you will succeed in certain processes and actions because you have internalised them.
