Back When It All Started

Boxing’s been around in Canada for well over a century. It actually started catching on during the early 1900s. Back then, it was harder, longer fights, fewer rules, and not much protective gear. There were small-town gyms popping up all over the country. Most men boxed for discipline, conditioning, or to have something better. It wasn’t glamorous, but it worked. 

George Chuvalo: The Man Who Wouldn’t Fall

You can’t talk about Canadian boxing without talking about George Chuvalo. He was a heavyweight from Toronto who fought in the ‘60s and ‘70s. He fought some of the greatest in boxing, including Muhammad Ali twice. Chuvalo lost those fights, but he earned respect for one simple reason: nobody ever knocked him down in 93 pro bouts. Not once. He took punch after punch and just kept going. If there is one word they use to describe Chuvalo, it’s “tough”. 

Lennox Lewis: A Canadian Start

Another name everybody knows is Lennox Lewis. He was born in England, but grew up in Kitchener, Ontario. He boxed for Canada at the 1988 Olympics and came home with gold. Later, he became the world heavyweight champion as a pro. In technical terms, he competed for Britain, but Canadians claim him all the same. After all, he learned the sport here and got his first real training in Canadian gyms.

Arturo Gatti: All Heart

Arturo Gatti might be best remembered for his blood-and-guts style. Born in Italy, raised in Montreal, Gatti was pure action. His fights were never boring. He didn’t back down—ever. His fights against Micky Ward will go down as some of the greatest bouts in history. Gatti became a world champ and picked up fans worldwide with his fearless style. He’s been gone since 2009, but Canadian boxing circles still speak about him like he’s only recently left the sport. 

Who’s Fighting Now?

There are a few Canadian names worth keeping an eye on today.

• Kim Clavel from Quebec is a world champion and also a full-time nurse.
  
• Jean Pascal, also from Quebec. Although retired this summer, has been around a while and held world titles.
  
• Custio Clayton, out of Nova Scotia, made it to the Olympics and is fighting professionally.
